Suggestions for Solving our Dormancy?

Hello, all!

This community has been quite dormant lately. Out of the twenty-one members who have created accounts on these forums, only about four of them actually make and reply to posts nowadays. It would be very nice if we could have at least half of the members participating in discussions, there are a good number of them out there! If a potential new member were to access our site, and read what little forum posts and participation we have, they would be less likely to join and become active. However, if our community was booming with posts, gaining new posts as the guest navigated through the site (that's a bit much, but you get my general picture), a new potential member may join us.

I'd personally like to quadruple the member count, which should be easy due to the size of the Steam group, which counts at 148 members. The process of making anything viral and popular is constituted in a bell curve, with a certain amount of existing members to act as the "catalyst" during the first stage, the uphill movement which triggers the progression to the middle of the graph, the ones who see the popularity of the group, hear from their friends, and join because they have either determined its activity and entertainment level or have been told great things about it. Finally, there is the last group, the stragglers, the ones who did not want to join at first, but finally oblige due to sheer numbers and because it is "the cool thing to do". Right now, we are on the first stage. Our goal is to make the catalyst happen somehow.

How to repair both issues, I lack a specific course of action. I understand that this might be the stance of the general consensus, which is why nothing has been done. Again, I understand that advertising is difficult, but there has to be some place on the massive behemoth of the Internet where we can say, "Hey! We exist! Join us!" (Maybe not that bluntly, but you get the picture).

In conclusion, increasing our numbers is going to take work (Oh man, work. Can't stand work). It's going to take active members, active discussions, pages and pages of dense topics (no spamming, though). It may sound daunting, but that's what it takes, to put it out quite forcefully. The whole issue of "Nobody's posting, so I can't either!" is a constant paradox of dormancy. The posting has got to start somewhere. Anywhere! Be bold. Create a discussion! Ask for opinions, and don't be afraid to share your own! After all, we are all entitled to our opinions, correct? My visions may sound completely skewed, but the growth is exponential. I understand that setting massive goals and only meeting them a little ways' may not be the most effective thing to do, but it is something. Heck, we could even strive to meet the goal of quadrupling our size, and more! Building a community from the ground up is not easy, but there are majestic rewards to come out of it! Yes, majestic!

I know for a fact that our site and domain, Vaxoc Gaming, are the only ones of their kind to exist with our name. While nobody will have an epiphany and suddenly become randomly compelled to type in the letters V-A-X-O-C, in that order, into a Google search bar, we are eighth from the top, with the top result being our old site, which provides a link to this new site. My point is, we are so unique that we can get our own spot on a Google search page! We can utilize that! Throw our name around a little bit. It may provide grand results.

I apologize for the five-paragraph essay I am writing, but that just demonstrates how much I care for the sake of this community. I hope we are a big, happy family someday (or at least the majority being), but that will take time, and it will take work. If you are too lazy to read the whole sh'bang, at least read the TL;DR versions below.

TL;DR Version:
We are lacking participation, and we need more members. To fix this, we must raise activity, and invite our friends. The more active members we have, the more random guests who have and are going to view our forums will enter our community. We should come up with a goal, a certain number of members. Mine was mentioned above as quadrupling the amount of members in this group. It's going to take work, but that's how it goes. Almost nothing that is good comes easily, we should all know that by now.

Even shorter TL;DR Version: We need more members. Increasing activity + gaining more of our friends' participation = more random members coming in without our help. That should be our ultimate goal.

I am, as always, open to the opinions of the entire community. What do you all think our course of action should be?

Very good and insightful post. I couldn't agree more with everything you have said! :) If people were to legitimately refer their friends (not just saying "Hey, look at this site," but also talking about it with them briefly or showing them around), it would be awesome! We definitely have potential, and I will definitely do everything I can to help it succeed, but we need you all too! Let's do this!:D

Thanks, iTech! I put a lot of effort into it! :)

As for the referrals, I definitely agree with showing potential members more than our name, or the cover page. Along with this, our Feedback forum, when properly utilized, will allow for the fundamental growth of the community in the technical aspect. As in, instead of saying, "This site sucks. There's no hope. Go die in a hole." (Hopefully never THAT extreme), we can say "Maybe [blank] could be improved/changed/added/removed". Constructive criticism is key.

Your usage of the words 'dormancy' and 'paradox' kind of took my attention away from the point/s that you were making, BobSolomon, in which I was compelled to learn the meaning of them. Curse my terrible education in English. Nevertheless, I like your ideas and I think we can make this happen. This will require work, like you said, and it will have to be a team effort. We need to set a quota/goals in order to increase our member count to the point that it is quadruple that of what we have now. Perhaps we can do this by assigning a few people to spearhead this approach in which they along with other contributing members will come up with the ideas we need to make this goal real. We need a format for advertisement, a format for invitation to our group. I believe we should be posting this 'invitation' all across steam, forums, Reddit, wherever and it should include a general definition of what our group is, what we aim to do, why you should join us, and the services we provide, etc. Words can't describe what I'm thinking. I feel that this post is arbitrary , so if you're interested in what I'm getting at, ask me. I also somewhat think we need an extension to the website. The forums aren't that detailed, and don't tell you much about the group, so I suggest we create a few pages telling people about us, and what they may gain access to if they get involved in our community.

Also, your Nicholas Cage animation in your signature made this 10x harder. :D

I agree. Were you thinking of specialized images? Or something else? If so, I could always release a "branding pack" so to speak, that is, a ZIP file that contains different styles of VG logos that could be used by people for things such as that.

Do you mean pages on the website? Or pages on other social media sites? (Both are beneficial, but which were you referring to here?) The reason I ask is because I might be able to tweak the website so that we have standalone pages and not just forums, which I've been thinking about doing.

I agree! and I understand the inability to put it into words ;)

Feel free to express your opinion! :D

I'm glad to see you all are interested as well in seeing the community grow! Perhaps we could meet on TeamSpeak one day or something to discuss where we should go from here. Let me know if you all have any more ideas! I love getting suggestions and feedback! :) Of course, all I ask is that if you think we should branch out to another social network or something, just let me know instead of creating an account on behalf of the community - I try and do this myself to keep track of everything. :p

I was thinking of specialised images and specialised text.

Yeah, standalone pages on the website (the one with the forums) would be great. We could then have a link in a sort of navigation bar that takes you to the forums.

I would like for us to convene in a meeting THIS weekend (if possible) to discuss this topic on our TeamSpeak 3 Server, ts3.vaxocgaming.com.

I have quite a few ideas that I think you guys would like to hear.
